OASIS Software package
With the OASIS software package you can record, segment, and analyse, pen trajectories over time using WACOM digitizers. The software does not recognize what you write, it can merely quantify how you write. OASIS allows you to create your own interactive tests and experiments due to its flexible macro language. The software has
already been used to gather empirical data to check motor control theories, to investigate why some
children's writing has a poor quality, to quantify motor slowness in patients with schizophrenia and
depression, to evaluate the effects of stress factors, to test the response of subjects to different dosages of a
new drug, to quantify handwriting and fine motor problems after treatment for acute lymphoblastic leukemia,
and for forensic research. A couple of other areas of application are being investigated. You can read a published article about OASIS.
Extra modules
The OASIS macro language consists of many modules of which some, very special ones, are not integrated into the basic package of OASIS. These modules are not needed for the normal usage of OASIS but could be useful for advanced analysis and stimuli presentation.
-
Control of a Keithley DAS1202 DAQ-card. Very useful if you want to collect other types of analogue and digital data beside the information that the digitizer provides. This module has already been used to collect EMG data while simultaneously recording pen movements.
-
Advanced signal processing. This module features a special set of actions for the processing of signal occurring over time. This module is very useful in conjunction with the DAS1202 and the PSDA modules.
-
Power Spectral Density Analysis (PSDA). With this module OASIS you can do Power Spectral Density Analysis (PDSA) within the OASIS macro language.
-
WordPerfect Graphics file output. This module provides OASIS with high resolution vector based graphical output. Ideal for making graphs for your presentation.
-
Animation of bitmaps. Only useful for those who need to include fancy animated objects into their macros.
-
Soundblaster sound. Play and record wave files with OASIS. This is a much better way to give auditory feedback to your subjects. You can even let the computer give verbal instructions.

Digitizer support
OASIS currently supports all the serial WACOM digitizer series. Special drivers for these digitizers are included in OASIS, the normal drivers are not suitable for scientific research. We can provide modified pens for these digitizers which have a larger pen pressure range when compared to unmodified pens (up to 800 gr.).
System requirements
The current version of OASIS (8.1) requires, as a minimum, a Pentium PC running at 100 Mhz with at least 20 Mb of free disk space. OASIS is a DOS program. Make sure you have the proper Mouse, VESA, and XMS, drivers installed to take full advantage of the capabilities of the PC and OASIS. If you run OASIS under Windows 95/98 most of these drivers will be loaded. OASIS does not run under Windows NT 4.0, just like many other DOS programs.
